We've become a nearly accident-free home, ever since Pierogi caught on to his potty bells. But the occasional accident still happens, like late at night when he's too sleepy to make it to the door or if we somehow miss the sound of the bells. So with that progress, I've finally stopped stockpiling paper towels and accident spray. The other day, when we nearing the end of our last bottle of accident spray (which I always hope will be the last :) I remembered reading about natural sprays. I'm always eager to incorporate natural substitutes into our home and so I gathered the ingredients to make a quick bottle of accident spray.
Plenty of recipes for natural accident spray exist, but I chose to make one with hydrogen peroxide as the key ingredient for it being odorless. The recipe that I tested called for about a 1:2 ratio of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. It also suggested to add a generous drizzle of dish detergent and I chose to add a few drops of orange scented essential oil. I simply combined everything in a mixing bowl and then poured it into a spray bottle.
Here's the final product. The ingredients tended not to jive well and separated like an oil based salad dressing.
One of my main concerns with the spray, beside its effectiveness, was whether it would stain our carpeted areas. So I tested the spray on an old towel and after blotting up the area and allowing it to dry, no discoloration occurred! But, you could definitely tell where I had sprayed because a residue of baking soda was left. To combat this, the recipe suggests following-up with a vacuum. Now, I'm all for thoroughly cleaning, but I don't love lugging out our vacuum more than I have to...
In the end, I loved that the spray was homemade and I liked scenting the spray, but in reality, the natural spray just didn't seem practical. We'll be going back to using this brand of Stain & Odor Remover, which is what we've kept on hand since Pierogi came home. We love it for its convenience and it works wonders on stinky odors. That's a wrap in my book!
