Believe it or not, everytime I make myself a piping hot cup of hot chocolate, Pierogi begs me for a sip. And every time, I have to explain to him that there are just certain things that we can't share, including toothbrushes and human hot cocoa. But he also has searing puppy eyes that reach deep into my mind and command me to do whatever he wants. So, I found a way for him to finally get his own (dog-safe) mug of hot cocoa! Plus, we're also sharing a decadent version for humans...
Hot Cocoa for the Hounds:
Yields 1 serving
- 1 cup of (cow's) milk (We typically only keep skim milk on hand, but curious about the dog-safeness of alternate milks, like almond or soy, I looked it up. The verdict is mixed, so be sure to do some research if you stock something else in the fridge.)
- 1 tablespoon of carob powder
Combine both ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat and continuously stir until the carob powder is dissolved. Allow the cocoa to cool and serve in a shallow mug or bowl. To limit the amount of dairy in this treat, we abstained from adding anything additional, such as whipped cream, to the cocoa. Instead, we finished with a dog gingerbread cookie.
Hot Cocoa for the Humans:
Yields 1 serving
- Your favorite store bought or homemade hot cocoa mix
- Milk (enough based on your recipe)
- 1/2 cup whipped cream
- 1/2 cup flavored frosting (This was divine)
- Cookies to top it all off (Highly recommend)
One of my favorite winter flavors is salted caramel. So for this people-friendly recipe, we whipped up a decadent mug of salted caramel hot cocoa and overloaded salted caramel flavors wherever possible. We started with a sea salt caramel hot cocoa mix and then prepared a rich topping by beating equal parts whipped cream and salted caramel frosting together. Finally, we finished with a...yep, salted caramel cookie.
And here we are! A cup of hot cocoa for both pals and pups.
How cute are these big and little reindeer mugs? The little guy kills me!
Then at long last, Pierogi finally got to try a sip of (doggie) hot cocoa.
I'd say that we were both fans!
P.S. I think these sweet drinks would pair well with a holiday movie marathon. What do you think? :)
Woof! (Hey, there!) Pierogi, Gilly and Sarah here. Thanks for stopping by our dog blog. We're a little dog-obsessed around here and Pierogi & Co. is all about inspiring you to enjoy the dog days. Because life's more fun with your best (furry) friend by your side. So grab a bone and follow along as we stop to sniff the flowers...
