Sooo, Pierogi's birthday was last week and I didn't remember until I opened a birthday promotion email from a local pet store...
I felt so terrible, but tried to recover the situation as quickly as possible. For starters, I bashfully walked over to Pierogi to address the elephant in the room. Basically, for at least a dozen times, I alternated apologies and "good boy" remarks. He seemed to accept my apologies, so I moved on to plan his birthday surprises.
That's when I grabbed Mike and we made a mad dash for Target (and HomeGoods)!
Thank goodness I already had a box of dog cake mix on hand! I baked the cake in a sheet pan and then punched out as many layers as I could with a paw print cookie cutter. The frosting is a quick combination of plain yogurt and honey -- our favorite go-to frosting.
And since Pierogi helped Gilly out with his birthday treats, I also assembled an extra treat for Gilly.
Then, when everything was ready, I snuck up on the napping birthday boy to present his surprise...
At first, the toy was the main attraction to Pierogi and he dashed off with it leaving his little cake behind.
Pierogi and Gilly have always loved the burrow toys by ZippyPaws, so we were thrilled to find a hedgehog set for Pierogi's birthday.
After a while, Pierogi was ready to try his cake...
And bite by bite he gobbled it up!
Hope your birthday was a good one, Po George! We love you SO, SO much!
