Right around four months old, Pierogi started to become a finicky eater. He just stopped accepting plain ol' dog kibble. So at the suggestion of our favorite dog store, we began experimenting with dog food toppers. In the end, we found a brand and flavor that we all liked, but when we found ourselves constantly running to the store to stock up, we wanted to come up with a homemade alternative. So today, we're sharing our three-ingredient version...
Chicken & Pumpkin Puree (for Dogs)
Yields approximately 12 cups
4 pounds of chicken thighs
15 ounce can of pure pumpkin (check the ingredients to avoid additives)
16 ounces of low sodium chicken (or other flavor) broth
Heat your oven to 350 degrees (F). Lay out the chicken on an ungreased, covered baking sheet and then bake for about an hour. The chicken is ready when the skin turns to a crispy golden color and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Allow the chicken to cool and then roughly shred.
Add shredded chicken, pumpkin and chicken broth to a food processor and roughly combine. Store in your refrigerator.
P.S. Substitute the chicken for turkey and this could become the perfect Thanksgiving treat!
